Milne Bay Province is located on the south eastern tip of New Guinea. Located between the Coral Sea and the Solomon Sea, it is not surprising that Milne Bay is a long known world class diving destination even back in the 80s. If one is considering a location with as many type of dive sites as possible, Milne Bay would be the first on the list.
Land based Resort - Tawali
Tawali resort is located on the northern side of Milne Bay. Therefore it is a fair way from the provincial capital of Milne Bay Province - Alotau. Typically the journey would take just under an hour from Port Moresby to Gurney airport, followed by a 2 hour trip on a minibus plus a short boat ride. The resort itself boasts 17 sea view bungalows, each with two queen size beds and a balcony with additional features such as a conference room and the ocean villa for special occasions. When approaching the main jetty, it is not unusual to see game fishes such as trevallies or even manta rays passing beneath your feet. The fringing reef around the resort is also a spectacular site for snorkelling and critter spotting at night.
Usually most would fly from Port Moresby to Alotau which would take around 1-1.5 hours. Milne Bay province is also accessible by cruise ships from Australia.
There are small stores close by the airport if you need some refreshments. Digicel SIM cards and top up services are also available. Supermarkets and ATMs are available in Alotau.
